North Fork of the Tongue

North Fork of the Tongue June 12 2011

The North Fork the Tongue is actually moderately fish-able.  The meadow snow has mostly melted off and the turnouts are accessible.  There is still a bunch of snow in the trees.  The water is high and off color, but I could wade across on Sunday the 12th of June.  The visibility was about 20 inches, which allows the trout a window of opportunity to make your day.  I had several fish take a close look at my strike indicator, but I suspect the probably won’t hit a dry. I caught about 12 fish up to 14 inches in an hour and a half.  More than I expected or even hoped for, but I had a great time.  A worm pattern seemed to be very functional.

The South Tongue by Lake Sibley was also open, but I did not have time to stop by and fish.  The roads and camp ground were still closed.  Lake Sibley was still frozen, but it looked like it would ice off this week.  Other than the high mountain snow, which is considerable, I believe the run off is progressing quite nicely.  The Bighorns should be fishing well before most other areas.  Most of the roads are still closed, but the next week or two should open the larger forest service roads.  The low level creeks are all at flood stage and the color of mud.  The lakes and reservoirs are all fishing good if you need to wet a fly.

Have a great time this summer.
