North Fork of the Tongue Update
July 28, 2011
The NFT is fishing great now. We have rolled through the run off of the century and the hatches are starting to do good. The same old hatches are working. If you watch closely for size, shape and color, you should do well all day. The NFT pack is generally Grey Drakes and Green Drakes mixed with some Brown Drakes. There are also PMD’s, tan Caddis, Ants, Beatles, and Hoppers that are fishing well at different times of the day. Standard nymphs are generally working, but when the Drys are working, I don’t pay much attention to the nymphs.
If you have been waiting for the waters to come down, they are down now and have been good for a couple weeks. The good dry fly fishing has just started this week and will get better and better every day until late September to early October on the lower waters. There are a lot of hoppers in the mountains in most areas, but the fish are just getting started on them. The hopper patterns are working differently all across the mountain. I am expecting the fish to go crazy over the hoppers in the next few weeks.
The rest of the mountain is fishing great. We have been fishing the Buffalo area for the past two weeks on Dry’s and the Middle Fork of the Powder is fishing great. Tongue Canyon and Shell Canyon are still a bit high, but the rest of the mountain is fishing great. Don’t wait any longer for you fishing fix come to the Bighorn Mountains and enjoy the great fishing for the next two months.
I will try to get time to update more later.
Roger
