Imagine yourself…

Casting to “Wild Trout” in the shadow of the Big Horns, wading the same waters that were waded by the likes of Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, General Crook, Colonel Custer and Colonel McKenzie nearly a century and a half ago.  Imagine yourself standing on a riffle making a cast to trout where these western icons could have fished while they living in and settling the West. Although fishing techniques were different, the history of the West is deep in this area.

Reclusive, territorial, and somewhat nocturnal by nature.

The trophy brown trout is the most challenging of our trout species. Growing to trophy size in both our streams and still waters.

Yellowstone Cutthroat are the only native trout species in the Bighorn Mountains.

In the 1870′s sport fish like the Rainbow, Brown and Brook trout were introduced to the West by the Federal Government via train and aquarium cars.  At the time, the government did not think of the invasive nature these trout and did not fathom the affect they would have on the native Yellowstone Cutthroat trout.  Since that time, Wyoming Game and Fish has been re-introducing Yellowstone Cutthroat into many of their native waters and in some cases they are doing very well. The North Fork of Tongue River in the Bighorn Mountains is a success story as a fishery due to the catch and release regulations and an ongoing stocking program to keep larger fish and high fish numbers in that section of the stream.  There are nine other streams in the Bighorns in which the Game and Fish Department has cleaned out everything and restocked the streams with only Yellowstone Cutthroats.  These streams are hoped to regenerate the purity of the Bighorn Mountain Yellowstone Cutthroat trout.
